The Safest, Most Operationally Efficient Method for Trimming and Sampling Coils in Wire Rod Mills

Maximum safety and efficiency through automated coil trimming— precise, repeatable, and complete elimination of manual intervention.

In wire rod mills, the final material properties of coiled wire rod are critical to the final product quality. The coil’s head and tail ends are typically removed from the main body and scrapped due to varying mechanical and metallurgical properties. Both ends must be removed before coils are compacted and bound, with mills relying on traditional methods to do so. These methods negatively impact operational efficiency, operator safety, and ultimately, the financial bottom line.

As pressures increase to enhance operator safety, improve yield, and modernize for future automation, the introduction of TrimRob, a robotic coil trimming and sampling solution, marks a significant leap forward for wire rod mills. TrimRob simultaneously addresses several of the greatest challenges that have been traditionally associated with wire rod mills.

High-Speed Shears

While high-speed shears offer accuracy and repeatability when installed before the mill’s laying head, they can be disruptive to overall operations. For existing mills, the integration of a high-speed shear into an existing line can be highly intrusive, requiring major modifications. High-speed shears are technically complex systems that demand significant predictive and preventive maintenance. Additionally, certain steel grades require manual intervention downstream due to their metallurgical behavior during cooling.

Manual Trimming

Manual trimming is the most common method, but it is inherently unsafe and very labor-intensive (in some cases up to a 4-person crew). Performed in loud, hot, dusty environments with significant operator exposure to moving coils, the risk of injury is substantial. Moreover, manual trimming is repetitive, ergonomically hazardous, and often comes with significant variation in ring counting and removal accuracy. Additionally, as workforce shortages grow and safety requirements become more stringent, manual trimming is becoming increasingly unsustainable.

Autonomous Trimming and Sampling

TrimRob delivers greater consistency and reduces risk in wire rod trimming and sampling. As the industry’s first foundry-rated robotic system designed for autonomous coil trimming and sampling, it offers a safer, smarter, and more efficient alternative to traditional methods. Installed within the coil handling area of a wire rod mill, the system simulates the manual trimming process with far greater precision, reliability, and safety.

For mills with slower production speeds, a single robot can manage both the head and tail of each coil. Integrated into the mill’s coil handling and quality control systems, TrimRob removes the precise number of rings and can take additional quality-assurance samples, delivering the samples to a separate sample handling system.

TrimRob reduces operational risk, improves yield stability, and enhances overall product quality through precise, repeatable trimming. By integrating seamlessly with mill systems and enabling data-driven process control, it sets a new benchmark for intelligent, future ready wire rod mill operations.

Long Rolling

Strategic Advantages of TrimRob

Operator Safety

TrimRob significantly reduces human interaction with moving coils, cutting tools, and hazardous environments, and lowers the risk for repetitive strain injuries

Lower Operational Expenditures

Less intrusive than shear-based solutions, reducing labor requirements and injury-related costs.

Improved Yield Stability

Accurate, repeatable ring removal reduces metallic losses and improves overall product quality.

Future-Ready Automation

Aligned with Industry 4.0 initiatives, TrimRob represents the first step toward a full suite of robotic solutions for long rolling mills.

Proven Industrial Architecture

All core equipment is well-established in heavy industrial environments, ensuring long-term reliability and low maintenance.

Key to TrimRob’s functionality is a multi-layered vision system that identifies coil edges, counts rings, and provides direct feedback for trimming operations. Using this multi-layered system, TrimRob can identify the start position and coil geometry to determine where to initiate the robot cycle based on the target trim setpoint. Ring-counting algorithms detect bunched or irregular rings to ensure consistency. Finally, precision cutting guidance ensures accurate removal with ±1 ring accuracy above 8.0 millimeters diameter and ±2 rings down to 5.0 millimeters.

Designed for demanding production environments, TrimRob boasts a 60-second cycle to count and remove rings per coil end, supporting a wire rod size range from 5 to 28 millimeters. The robot is positioned away from coil hooks or vertical pallets to avoid interference with coil-handling equipment, ensuring zero disruption to upstream or downstream operations.

TrimRob also integrates well with advanced monitoring features, increasing intelligence and reducing process variability. For example, feedback from Morgan Water Boxes (ETCS)—in-line temperature control for wire rod mills from Primetals Technologies—determines the number of uncooled rings while the Laying Head Vision System monitors ring patterns in real time. These enhancements close the loop between production, trimming, and quality control.

Globally Proven Technology

A reference installation in South Korea demonstrates TrimRob’s reliability in demanding industrial environments. The system operates continuously, improving safety conditions, stabilizing yield, and reducing downtime from trimming.

Steel producers worldwide who seek safer, more consistent, and more profitable operations in wire rod mills are increasingly turning to automation. TrimRob provides a proven, intelligent, and future-focused solution to one of the most challenging manual tasks on the mill floor. By reducing risk, enhancing yield, and integrating seamlessly with mill systems, TrimRob offers mills a compelling path toward operational excellence and digital transformation.
