VAICON AutoFix: Automatic Locking System for Converter Vessels

The VAICON AutoFix is a new automatic locking system for exchangable converter vessels in stainless steel production. AOD converters typically have a lifetime of up to 150 heats, after which the vessel refractory is depleted. At this point, the vessel is exchanged for a newly relined and preheated one, allowing production to continue. The VAICON AutoFix system enhances safety and reduces exchange time.

During the vessel exchange, the locking elements of the suspension system, which secure the converter to the trunnion ring, must be opened. The opening and closing of the locking elements are typically performed manually, a process that requires attention, time, and special safety measures due to the proximity to the heated vessel and hot trunnion ring. The VAICON AutoFix suspension system is a robust, maintenance-friendly, and patented automatic suspension system. It is designed to perform all necessary unlocking and locking operations without manual intervention, even in the harsh conditions of the trunnion ring area.

Four fixation pins with keyways are integrated into the vessel’s supporting flange. When the vessel is lowered onto the trunnion ring, these pins engage with the ring and are secured by hydraulically actuated wedges. The wedge connection is self-locking, enhancing operational safety. For maintenance, service openings are provided on the trunnion ring body. Locking units can be removed from the trunnion ring for major maintenance tasks in the workshop.

To ensure maximum availability, the hydraulic unit that actuates the locking cylinders features a redundant two-pump design, with one pump operating in standby mode. Each hydraulic cylinder is supplied and controlled independently. The VAICON AutoFix locking mechanism is operated from a local control panel positioned at a safe working location. The locking state is monitored by a redundant system that includes electrical sensors inside the trunnion ring and a fail-safe mechanical indication system visible from the ring’s exterior.
