Transfer bar heat loss has long been a challenge for hot strip mill operators. Heat is lost through conduction, convection, and radiation, leading to uneven temperatures along the transfer bar during rolling. To address this, operators increased rolling loads and power levels in the finishing mill. However, with rising energy costs and the global push to reduce CO2 emissions, it became the perfect time for steel producers to invest in technology that helps retain heat in the transfer bar. This technology reduces the need for higher rolling loads and power, cutting energy consumption and costs. It also allows for higher speeds in the finishing mill, improving throughput, ensuring more consistent dimensional tolerances, reducing edge cracking, and preventing surface defects.

Speakers

Paul Sherman

Paul joined Primetals Technologies in 1979, initially as a mechanical engineer. Since then, he has held various positions in the design, research and development, services, process, and commissioning departments. Paul later took on the role of Encopanel System Business Manager, working on numerous hot strip mill Encopanel heat retention systems globally. Before his recent retirement, Paul led the metallurgical services division in the UK. In this webinar, Paul discusses the challenges of transfer bar heat loss, the importance of energy reduction in the current climate of energy price instability, the foundation of a transfer bar heat retention system, and the necessary process considerations.

Barry Clay

Sales Manager, Flat Rolling, Primetals Technologies

Barry joined the technology department of Primetals Technologies UK in 2011. He subsequently became a key member of the proposals team for flat rolling projects. In 2017, Barry joined the metallurgical services department as a proposals engineer before becoming the sales manager for flat rolling and taking product ownership of the Encopanel heat retention system. In this webinar, Barry presents the Encopanel heat retention technology, providing an in-depth view of its features and benefits, along with the results from installed equipment.

Moderator – Sandip Samanta
