On May 12, 2026, Baosteel’s 2-strand slab caster No.6 from Primetals Technologies was successfully started up at the Baoshan plant in Shanghai. The new caster produces both conventional and high-end slabs. Primetals Technologies supplied the mechanical equipment and a comprehensive scope of Level 1 and 2 automation systems, and provided construction and implementation services.
As the latest result of close collaboration between the two companies, the project progressed seamlessly from design to commissioning, achieving a timely and efficient startup.
Advanced Design for High-End Products
The Baosteel No. 6 caster adopts Primetals Technologies’ advanced mechanical design concepts combined with state-of-the-art automation and digital solutions, enabling the production of both conventional steel grades and high-end slabs. During the design phase, advanced models from Primetals Technologies were used to determine the optimal roll geometry, effectively reducing mold level fluctuations and enabling higher casting speeds and improved production efficiency.
At the same time, multiple intelligent process and quality control systems were integrated, including the Dynacs 3D dynamic secondary cooling system and the DynaGap 3D dynamic soft reduction system, ensuring that internal slab quality reaches industry-leading levels.
Stable and Efficient Operation
To meet the stringent requirements of high-grade steel, the caster integrates a series of proven and reliable solutions from Primetals Technologies, supporting stable, efficient, and high-quality production. The high-performance Smart Mold cassette-type mold, equipped with the DynaWidth mold-width adjustment system, enables flexible switching between different slab sizes. The Mold Expert system ensures stable and reliable casting operations, while the Quality Expert system monitors and predicts the entire production process, continuously enhancing product quality.
The Eco-Star spiral roller significantly extends the service life of segment rolls and ensures precise implementation of dynamic reduction. These rollers also increase slab surface temperature after exiting the horizontal segment, greatly reducing energy consumption in hot rolling reheating.
Long-Term Partnership Yields New Results
Baosteel and Primetals Technologies have maintained close cooperation for several decades, with more than 20 casters successfully implemented together. The successful startup of this No. 6 caster is one of several projects rapidly executed by the two partners in a short period of time. It further strengthens their strategic partnership and reflects a high level of mutual trust in technology and service capabilities. Previously, Primetals Technologies commissioned multiple new and upgraded casters for Baosteel Zhanjiang, Baosteel Meishan, and Maanshan Iron & Steel.
