Enhancing Productivity and Roll Performance with the Online Roll Profiler
The Online Roll Profiler (ORP) is a roll grinder installed on the entry side of the mill stand. Its primary function is to grind the work roll during rolling or during the bar-to-bar gap time using a driven grinding wheel. The Online Roll Profiler (ORP) can steadily grind the full roll barrel, even under severe hot rolling conditions, while maintaining excellent roll surface shape and roughness over an extended period.
The Online Roll Profiler (ORP) Offers Several Advantages, as Follows
- Extended exchange cycle of work roll
- Expanded same width rolling
- Realization of width reverse rolling (narrow to wide)
- Elimination of roll surface defects (higher productivity)
Advantages of the Online Roll Profiler (ORP)
- Extended exchange cycle of the work roll: the Online Roll Profiler (ORP) extends the exchange cycle of the work roll by grinding the roll barrel during rolling or bar-to-bar gap time using a driven grinding wheel, thereby maintaining an excellent roll surface shape and roughness. This capability can extend the roll change interval by approximately two to three times compared to conventional mills without work roll shifting.
- Expanded same-width rolling: conventional mills face limitations in same-width rolling due to high spot defects on the strip surface caused by wear on the work roll surface where the strip edge contacts. The ORP can grind down high spot wear to maintain a smooth surface profile, extending the rolling length to the same width. The Online Roll Profiler (ORP) has demonstrated the ability to prevent high spot defects, even after 60 coils of same width.
- Realization of width reverse rolling (narrow to wide): typically, hot strip mill rolling follows a coffin schedule, which restricts strip width transition from wide to narrow within one roll campaign. The Online Roll Profiler (ORP) enables schedule-free rolling by smoothly grinding the work roll surface during rolling, allowing for a rolling schedule transition from narrow to wide strip width.
- Elimination of roll surface defects (higher productivity): by removing surface defects from the work roll, the ORP reduces unscheduled work roll changes, leading to higher productivity.
