The SlagMon is an online optical measurement system that optimizes the tapping process in electric arc furnaces (EAF), LD converters (BOF), and AOD converters for stainless steelmaking. Precise detection of slag flow during the tapping process is essential to minimize the slag transfer into the casting ladle. A lower slag content improves steel quality and reduces treatment time, deoxidation, and alloying agents in the following process steps. Furthermore, the lifetimes of steel ladles are improved.
SlagMon uses advanced infrared technology to differentiate between slag and steel in real-time. This steel slag detection system, equipped with an industrial PC and machine vision software, provides continuous monitoring and visualization of the process. Special algorithms ensure a clear vision even in smoky and dusty environments. The infrared camera, strategically positioned up to 20 meters away from the stream, ensures safe and efficient operation. It features an air-cooled housing with an air-jet lens cleaning system.
With its robust data archiving capabilities, SlagMon enables detailed offline analysis, storing all significant parameters for every processed heat. SlagMon can be installed without modifications to existing plant equipment, ensuring seamless integration into daily operations. It is free of wear parts and accessible for maintenance, guaranteeing high availability and long maintenance cycles. As well as detecting slag while tapping, SlagMon can also be used to detect steel during deslagging.
